The Importance of Reading to Your Children!

I would like to share my passion about the importance of reading to your children.  As we know, reading is a fundamental part of both their learning journey and their childhood development.

I live in Toronto, Ontario, and I currently work with children from JK to Grade 8.  I also teach Spanish at the Toronto District School Board.  I have a doctoral degree in education from the University of Toronto and have recently published four children’s books for ages 3-10 years old.

My daughters inspired me to write these books.  During their childhood development, they had difficulty pronouncing words and letters, in particular, the sounds “SH” and “F” – common issues for many young children.  Consequently, these books have been approved by a speech-language pathologist and can help children practice their articulation at all levels.  I have also translated three of these books into Spanish.

My books are also available on Amazon.com/author/marisoldandrea and Amazon.ca.  Please click on the YouTube link to read an excerpt from the book, “Figaro, the Flamboyant Frog.” And that’s not all – stay tuned for my upcoming children’s book, “About the Sloth, Sammy,” with a focus on the “S” sound.

Thank you for your attention and consideration.  Please let me know if you have any questions and, of course, keep on reading to your children!

‘Words Worth Sharing,’ Solo Exhibition – May 1 to 31, 2014

It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. However, words are powerful and thus, are worth a picture as well. This exhibition is about ‘words’ and ‘messages to ponder.’ At times, I feel like it is harder to communicate emotions. This is why, I use the canvas to transmit these sentiments. These words are aimed to be ‘reactions’ from my personal experiences, and my perception of society. I used acrylics, candies, glitter, and other craft materials, and different techniques to inscribe the messages (such as painting and piping—as piping a cake!).

I exhibited these works at the Leaside-Toronto Public Library.
