My “First Time” at the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival

On the night of the much-anticipated U.S election day, for the first time, I decided to partake in the celebration of the Asian cinema. On November 6th, I attended the gala opener First Time, a Han Yan’s film about an ill girl (Shiqiao) who chronicles her quiet life on cassette tapes in order to compensate for her poor memory and to recollect her feelings and experiences. Shiqiao falls in love with an old crush who is a musician at heart. After a series of happy and unfortunate events, this “old crush” reciprocates her love. This film delivered a strong message of love, life, compassion and dreams. It was very moving; it provoked as much laughter as tears (unavoidable).
