(Slideshow: Christmas paintings over the years by Marisol D’Andrea)
Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!
Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!
This is why I love Christmas: It is a gift. Christmas has the ability to bring out generosity, kindness, forgiveness and love. It reminds people to think of others first, rather than only considering our own needs. The spirit of Christmas becomes an opportunity to achieve good deeds. Christmas allows one to reflect, thinking not only about who’s “naughty or nice,” but who may need support and compassion, especially during the holiday season.
One sees so much goodness in people during the season; many spend the holidays trying to make others happy, sharing gifts or reaching out to the community. For instance, this year, some of my colleagues came together to raise money to help a single mother’s Christmas wishes to come true – she and her family needed winter clothing and her young son had been wishing for a guitar. Our team at work was thrilled that we could reach out to support this family during the holidays, all of us recognizing the incredible joy that a simply wrapped box can bring.
The generosity of the holiday spirit has also found a home next to me. For the past ten years, my neighbour has dressed as Santa and his wife as Santa’s little helper, and they have travelled around the neighbourhood sharing presents and Christmas wishes to each kid on the block. These acts of generosity are the gift of Christmas.
Worth to note: Did you know that gift giving, Christmas cards, Christmas drinks and many other Christmas traditions are not modern gifts of capitalism? They actually come to us via the Ancient Romans who exchanged all of those things on New Year’s Day!
May we (Art Talk editor, Kayla and I) take this opportunity to extend our season’s greetings this December, and to wish you a Joyous Holiday, Merry Christmas and a Happy New 2013!
